We refer to the legs and firebox of the G2 Argentinian Charcoal Grill as ‘the body’, this is where the raging heat of your charcoal and timber fire will be controlled and contained.
The legs of the grill are 3mm thick, while the side panels and base are 2mm thick – excessive to be honest with you but solid. When you touch the grill you can feel the thickness of the material, there is a heavy, solid feel to all of it. The material used for the body is brushed 304 Grade Stainless Steel. The body is not just Australian Made, it’s folded by us on our Trumpf Trubend CNC Press Brake in-house by our skilled, dedicated team.
We are now offering a full 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel version of the grill, with every stainless component (including all of the internal gears, roller chain, sprockets etc) being made of 316 Stainless Steel. Please reach out to our team for pricing and availability on our 316 Marine Grade models.
While much of the competition have simply lined their stainless steel grill body with some fire bricks, we have taken ours a large step further, by insulating the grill body. We line the 2mm Stainless Steel walls with 50mm of Calcium Silicate Board, follwed by 25mm of high grade refractory Fire Brick, rated to over 1350°C.
Even when you’re running a firebox temperature of 700°C (hot enough to literally melt aluminium) the outside of the grill will not exceed 120°C. While this is still moderately hot, this has some huge benefits;
- Safety. If someone touches this surface their chances of being burned are much, much lower than they would be if they touched the side of a grill made without insulation. You still need to take care to ensure children are monitored around the grill at all times, but this grill is far safer than any of its uninsulated counterparts.
- Build it in. Our grills can be built into timber cabinetry, providing that a layer of either 18mm compressed cement sheet or 20mm of natural stone such as granite is used to line the void in the cabinetry, with a 20mm ventilated air gap between this layer and the grill itself. This is a game changer – no longer do you need to build the benches around your grill out of expensive stainless steel or concrete, you can use standard timber cabinets.
- Efficiency. Because we aren’t losing lots of heat through the walls and floor of the firebox, we’re able to maintain much higher temperatures in the firebox with very little fuel. This means you go through far less charcoal than you will with an uninsulated grill, saving you money and making the grilling process as sustainable as possible.
Something that stands out immediately when you first see our grills is that there is much more than just one level upon which to cook. There are actually four, all of which can be used simultaneously if the user so desired. The highest temperatures will be closest to the firebox, with the temperature dropping as we move upwards.
One of the most important things to understand is that we have designed the racks so that everything is interchangeable. Every Grill Surface can be used at every level, simply lift them off and place them on the level you want them on. This also gives us freedom to design new Grill Surfaces and accessories in the future, such as a motorised spit..
Let’s give you some details on each level;
- The Firebox
The internal edge of the firebox is folded inwards to create a lip on each side that your Grill Surfaces can be rested on. This is a favourite place for using the solid Round-Bar Grill Surface, as it’s the highest temperature you’ll get anywhere on the grill which makes it ideal for searing.
- The Variable Rack
This is the rack that you can raise and lower with an easy turn of the Handwheel. Perfect for using any of our grilling surfaces, with complete control over the heat for the user.
- The Removable Rack
This sits immediately above the Variable Rack, and is is called the ‘Removable Rack’ because it can be easily lifted off the grill and set aside, in the case that you’re wanting to raise the Variable Rack to its full height.
- The Resting Rack
This is the very top rack, which of course experiences the lowest temperatures on the grill. Does that mean it’s not useful? By no means! This is the perfect location for resting meat that you’ve just grilled, or hanging things to slow cook over hours in that beautiful low heat.
This is something that we are very proud of as a company – we have developed a unique, elegant and robust system to give our customers complete control over the grill. Ben (our founder) calls it the ‘Variable Rack System’, or VRS for short… Ben is an engineer and cares much more about how well a system works than what it’s called, so perhaps he shouldn’t have been allowed to name it, but here we are.
There’s a lot more to the design of the VRS than initially meets the eye, but here are some of the key highlights;
- Heavy duty stainless steel columns
These are the structural core of the VRS, made from folded 3mm 304 grade stainless steel. The columns are TIG welded onto 5mm thick stainless steel mounting plates, which are CNC cut and chamfered to blend neatly into the body of the grill.
- Cast Stainless Steel Monospoke Handwheel
Something that almost all of our visitors are suprised by is how solid every part of the grill is, and the Handwheel is no exception. Weighing 1.6kg of solid stainless steel the Handwheel design is the brainchild of our CAD modelling wizard, Matt Isailofski. This not only looks incredible, but feels it too. Almost every customer who visits and turns the Handwheel is taken aback by how smooth the action is.
- Bronze and Stainless Steel Worm Gear Drive
This is the heart of the VRS, the single most important part of the system. We had two key design requirements from the beginning; we wanted the Handwheel to face the front rather than the side of the grill and we didn’t want to have to use a brake or other mechanism to hold the grill at the required height. Enter Worm Gears – the perfect solution to both of these requirements. The Worm Gear set translates the rotation of the Handwheel drive shaft 90°, to turn the main drive shaft that runs horizontally between the columns. Worm Gears are self braking, so our system needs no brake at all. Just turn the wormwheel until you’ve reached the height you want, and let go.
- No Cables…
Most of our competitors use a stainless steel wire rope wrapped around the main drive shaft to raise and lower their grill rack. This was initially our direction too, however after running one in a high end restaurant we found that the combination of regular use and heat means that these cables are guaranteed to break, eventually. It’s like taking a metal spoon and bending it back and forth repeatedly, it doesn’t take long to snap the spoon in two. This phenomenon is called ‘Metal Fatigue’ and is the reason we chose not to use cables in our grills. Instead, we use Stainless Steel ‘Roller Chain’, similar to what you would see on a mountain bike. This chain wraps over a sprocket at the top of the column on each side, which are turned by the main drive shaft. When the sprockets turn, they pull the chain over the sprocket, raising or lowering the Variable Rack depending on the direction of movement.
- Cast Aluminium Guide Block
We needed something that we could attach to the Variable Rack that we could then link onto the roller chain drive in each column. We also had another key design criteria, that the Variable Rack be stable, not given to excessive movement or wobbling. The pursuit of this took over 18 months with multiple prototypes being tried before we settled on our Guide Blocks. These are effectively high temperature linear bearing units, riding on four 20mm solid stainless steel rods, two on each side. Rather than having the aluminium block rub directly against the stainless steel guide rods (which would introduce friction and other issues over time) we elected to use bronze bushings, impregnated with graphite for lubrication. These are shrink-fitted into the Cast Aluminium Guide Block using liquid nitrogen. Cool? Definitely, in every conceivable way.
- Inconel Spring Assisted
Other companies making Argentinian style grills tend to minimise the weight of the grill surfaces that they’re raising and lowering, to ensure that it’s easy for the customer to use their system. The issue for us was that we wanted our grill surfaces to be thick, and very, very heavy duty, which meant that they would need to be heavy. So to compensate for this extra weight we have spring-loaded both sides of the VRS, so that turning the handwheel is almost effortless, as the springs are assisting with the lift. These springs are made from Inconel, which is essentially “Super Stainless Steel”, most often used for turbine blades in jet engines or in the engine manifold of rockets, due to its ability to retain its tensile strength at high temperatures.
- Ceramic Bearings
To ensure smooth running of the bronze worm gear set and minimal friction within the system we have had special ceramic bearings manufactured for us, precisely to our specifications. The bearings and housing are made from Zirconia while the shields are Carbon Fibre. These are lubricated with Inox MX6 High Temperature Grease, a Food Grade lubricant designed for use in high temperature cooking equipment. Each grill also comes with a spare tube of grease so that you can lubricate the bearings and Worm Gear set at regular intervals.
- Custom CNC Machined Precision Parts
In order for the VRS to function, we need everything to fit together perfectly. For this reason rather than using off-the-shelf components we have custom designed almost every component for the VRS. The shafts, gears, bearing housings, bushings, Aluminium Guide Block and sprockets are all custom designs that are CNC machined to exacting tolerances, in some cases to within 0.05mm of the specified dimension. With careful QA checks in place at each step of production, you can be very confident in the quality and performance of any grill your purchase from us.
A major strength of our design is the ability to use a whole range of different Grill Surfaces at each grilling level, depending on what you’re cooking. We currently have two Grill Surfaces that come included with each grill, with a third in development…
- The Round Bar Grill Surface
This is one of the most heavy duty bar grills you’re ever likely to encounter. We initially looked at having cast bar grills made for us, but we didn’t want them to be cast iron, we wanted cast stainless and casting stainless in long, narrow sections is notoriously difficult to do. Instead we have have opted for CNC machined components to make a Grill Surface that is simultaneously solid, robust and also beautiful. The grill comprises two 6mm thick stainless steel endplates with 10mm CNC machined stainless steel rods bolted securely between them. These are as tough as any cast grill and can handle being dropped from a considerable height. You will receive two of these with your G2 Grill order.
- The V-Bar Grill Surface
This is what everyone looks for in an Argentinian Grill, the ability to cook steak and other meat over a surface that helps to drain off the oils into a drip tray. You will receive two of these with your G2 Grill order. We have taken the idea as far as we can, with 3mm thick laser-cut plates first having all of their edges milled to a 1.5mm radius, then folded to 90 degrees to create the ‘V’. These are then MIG welded into the final assembly, before welds are passivated to remove any discolouration.The Drip Tray is made from solid, cast stainless steel with plenty of capacity to hold all oil from a solid commercial cooking session, or can also be used to hold molten butter or similar to baste your food with. The Drip Tray has protusions on the back face that lock into carefully designed holes in the front face of the V-Bar Grill that will not allow the Drip Tray to be accidentally bumped off, which would be very dangerous considering it’s holding hot oil.
- Coming Soon – The Plancha
This will be a thick, flat plate that you can clip onto the top of your V-Bar Grill Surface, converting it into a Plancha! We are still working on the final design for this having tested cast iron and found it to be less than ideal for the application. This will be an optional extra that you can buy mid 2026 if all goes well!
